VISITA AD OXFORD:
Oxford è una città della Gran Bretagna che si trova a circa 100 km a ovest di Londra, la capitale.
Proprio come Londra è attraversata dal fiume Tamigi. In realtà due sono i fiumi attraversano la città: il Tamigi e il Cherwell. Ma il fiume Tamigi ad Oxford è chiamato Isis.
Il nome deriva dalla parola inglese “Oxenford“. Questo perchè le acque del Tamigi sono piuttosto basse ad Oxford, quindi sin dai tempi antichi la gente le attraversava a piedi. Più spesso, erano i buoi (in inglese “Oxen“) ad attraversarle, tirando i carri attraverso il guado (in inglese “Ford“).
La città è famosa per la sua università, che è tra le più prestigiose di Inghilterra (insieme a quella di Cambridge) e di certo la più antica. Quella che comunemente viene chiamata “università di Oxford” non è però un singolo edificio con una specifica sede. Si tratta bensì di un gruppo di college distribuiti all’interno della città.
Si presenta come una città moderna ormai, sebbene sia ancora molto evidente il suo aspetto medievale. E’ conosciuta infatti come “la città delle guglie“, tipica caratteristica dello stile architettonico medievale.

TRIP TO OXFORD:
Oxford is a city in Great Britain located about 100 km west of London, the capital.
Just like London, it is crossed by the River Thames. There are actually two rivers running through the city: the Thames and the Cherwell. But the River Thames in Oxford is called Isis.
The name comes from the English word “Oxenford“. That’s because the waters of the Thames are quite shallow in Oxford, so in ancient times people crossed them on foot. More often, it was “oxen” that crossed them, pulling the carts across the “ford“. Hence the name of the city.
The city is famous for its university, which is one of the most prestigious in England (together with Cambridge‘s) and certainly the oldest. However, what is commonly known as “Oxford University” is not a single building with a specific location. The university is in fact a group of colleges scattered inside the city.
It looks like a modern city now, although its medieval appearance is still very evident. It is in fact known as “the city of steeples“, a specific characteristic of medieval architecture.
